Criminal Investigation Detective

Criminal Investigation Detective…

Criminal Investigation Detective can also be called a CID this detective is part of the second stage of the investigation. This person will see the case till the investigation is over and a conclusion has been come too. Once the FAO has gathered all of their information they will then pass the case over to a CID and the police will no longer be a part of the investigation unless needed within the court to give a statement. The FAO’s notes from the crime scene will be passed along to the CID. However before the police pass the case onto the CID they need to work together, the FAO will call for superior officers to attend the scene and the appointed CID will also arrive. The CID’s responsibility is to make sure everyone at the scene should be there, the detective also needs to gather an appropriate idea of what may have happened within the scene.

The FAO should have cordoned off the scene, the CID should ensure that the scene is cordoned off accurately and appropriately making sure no evidence is missed. During the attendance of the CID at the crime scene the detective should identify any evidence which the SOCO’s should examine. The last role within the scene of the CID is to supervise the SOCO’s who are on site of the crime scene making sure they appropriately collect any evidence which is needed without contaminating or destroying it. Once the evidence is collected the CID assists the SOCO’s in appropriately labelling and bagging the items.

Its the CID's responsibility to the contact the crown prosecution services.

CID within OJ Simpson Case...

The CID within the Murder case of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman was Mark Fuhrman. When arriving at the crime scene Fuhrman should have made sure that Riske has cordoned off the scene appropriately leaving no evidence, as the scene was only cordoned off from the immediate beginning of Nicole's property any evidence beyond that point was most likely to be contaminated due to the high number of people attending the scene. This could have been adjusted by Fuhrman however he did not notice this mistake.
Another role which was supposed to be followed correctly by Fuhrman was to assist the SOCO's within the scene making sure that they were appropriately collecting and preserving any vital evidence. Fuhrman’s poor decision of allowing officers to place a used blanket over both bodies meant that any evidence upon each body could not be used as the blanket contaminated any evidence.
Fuhrman suspected OJ being the killer from the beginning of the investigation. During an illegal search of OJ's property Fuhrman discovered a bloody glove which matched the description of another found at the crime scene. However as the search was not authorised with a warrant and as Fuhrman jumped over OJ's garden wall there was many conspiracy’s coming from the defence team that Fuhrman planted this evidence in the aim to frame OJ.

The reason they believed this was because there was several statements from the general public and people he had previously worked with that Fuhrman was a racist, to back this up Fuhrman’s colleagues found Nazi paraphernalia within his desk during an internal investigation. There were statements from colleagues at the scene accusing Fuhrman of making degrading remarks surrounding Nicole’s dead body. Concluding to the internal investigation upon Fuhrman the detective ended up on the stand surrounding the whole situation. On March 9th he took to the stand denying any racial comments made to a woman claiming he had never met her. However several days later when questioned upon the witness stand again he took his 5th amendment right due to the internal investigation showing 41 recordings of Fuhrman labelling African Americans as the N word. There were also recordings of Fuhrman boasting about police brutality towards African Americans. He was also asked about planting evidence within OJ's property and took the Fifth Amendment.

Criminal Investigation Detectives in other cases...

Depending upon how serious a certain crime is will depend if that investigation has a CID. A CID is mainly involved within major crimes such as murders, rapes etc. Upon the request of a police officer for further assistance from a senior officer the investigation will then gain a CID who will overlook the case throughout. The CID will take control of the investigation and will assist his investigation team.
