Within this stage of the investigation the police will research into who and what types of crime are being committed within the area of the incident. This may help with gaining a suspect within the crime. They will also look at the area the crime is being committed and why it is. This can involve gang crime (Shootings and theft). Here the police will look at crime levels at a whole or individually this will help to rule out suspects or gain suspects and get an idea of who is committing certain crimes. The police will then produce both strategic and tactical assessments in how the evidence is collected; this assessment will then be given to local police forces. A judgement will be made from the crime scene itself on whether it was an individual or a group of people who committed the crime and this will develop into gathering evidence linking it to a suspect/s. If there is a suspect in mind the police will have to gather information on why the person has committed the crime whether it was spontaneous or planned and whether they have a motive for committing the crime.

Throughout the analysing of the murder of Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman it was clear that the murder was spontaneous and overkill had occurred. Overkill is where the killer viciously carries on injuring the victim even after they have passed. This shows a strong sign that the murder was personal. We know overkill occurred due to the fact both bodies had multiple stab wounds. The relationship between OJ Simpson and Nicole Simpson was known to be not the happiest of marriages as there are numerous 911 calls to authorities from Nicole about OJ committing violence towards her whether it being physically or verbally. This piece of information helped police link him to the murders. The personal link between OJ and Ronald Goldman was that it was 'rumoured' that Goldman and Nicole were 'dating', this is a clear sign of jealousy coming from OJ.

Not only were there stab wounds on each body but there were head injuries linking these murders to being a personal attack as it was inflicting a lot of pain, and there were also defensive wounds located upon both bodies. This shows that before the pair died there was a struggle.
